At this level, you'll be able to play current games at FHD resolution with the graphics settings at medium to high, depending on the game you're playing, of course.
Still, Acer makes an affordable gaming laptop that packs in some nice extras like direct controls for power and cooling and upgrades access to memory and storage. It runs cool and quiet, even running close to full tilt. A smaller version than the inch staple, the inch Razer Blade delivers a lot of gaming power for its size without feeling small -- an important consideration for a gaming laptop -- but has decent battery life, a nice size for travel and a subtle design for a gaming laptop that's buttoned-up enough for sitting in a meeting with the top brass or clients.
Read Razer Blade 14 review. Asus pairs an ultraportable inch two-in-one that has a relatively powerful AMD CPU with an external GPU dock equipped with a top-of-the-line Nvidia GeForce RTX mobile processor, and the result is an incredibly flexible system for both work and play that outperforms many bigger, clunkier gaming laptops.
Because it's a two-in-one, you can comfortably use an external gaming keyboard without the built-in keyboard getting in the way. A compromise you've traditionally had to make has been battery life, which has typically lasted as little as 2 hours of nonstop gaming. Processors would get throttled back and screens dim during hard-core gaming sessions, so a laptop that felt nimble when connected became a slog on battery power, turning your epic battles into battles of frustration.
That's been changing recently, as Intel, AMD and Nvidia have concentrated on improving their power management technologies. No, you still can't play for 10 hours on battery power, but now you can find some great gaming laptops with hour battery lives to make gaming on the road more feasible. The Max-Q versions run at slower frequencies than their full-size siblings -- that keeps down the noise and heat and allows them fit into thinner designs.
RTX models also accelerate ray-traced rendering and provide intelligent upscaling also known as DLSS where it's explicitly supported. If your favorite games don't use it, the lower-end Nvidia GTX Ti incorporates Turing, the last generation of Nvidia's technology, without the extra cost or power burden of the RT cores. The problem with the Max-Q, though, is that with its last-generation Optimus technology that's still used by a lot of laptops, you have to reboot to switch between a dedicated GPU mode and a power-saving mode, which only uses the GPU for accelerating, not actually drawing the screen so every frame has to travel from the GPU's dedicated memory over the system bus to the CPU and then to the screen rather than going directly from the GPU memory to the screen.
That means it can't take advantage of adaptive refresh-rate technologies and it can negatively affect frame rates. So why not leave it on the GPU mode all the time? Nvidia launched the new generation of its Max-Q architecture, which introduced Advanced Optimus, in It's smarter, with the integrated and discrete graphics sharing rather than switching the pipeline to the display, no reboot necessary. But Advanced Optimus needs a major change to system design, so laptops supporting Advanced Optimus still aren't plentiful.

As far as keyboards go, the most important gaming feature is n-key rollover. This means the keyboard physically scans each key separately. That probably sounds excessive, but keyboards that lack this feature can suffer missed keystrokes, which both ruins gameplay and hurts in everyday tasks.
Other keyboard considerations include LED backlighting which adds ambiance but does nothing for gameplay and mechanical keys vs. Mechanical keys are excellent—but are available on only a handful of laptops that usually weigh a ton.
We have seen a few designs with low-profile mechanical keyboards, but even we admit they can be an acquired taste. Having your games load from an SSD instead of a hard drive significantly cuts down on load times. What does matter more today is the size of the SSD rather than the interface it uses. If you go for laptop with a small SSD and large hard drive combo, expect to install your games to the hard drive. When laptop makers spec out gaming laptops, one of the levers they use to try to convince you to buy their product is upping the amount of RAM.
Anything more than 16GB our standard recommendation is usually a waste of money. You might want to blame laptop and PC makers for cynically using an erroneous spec to manipulate the public, but the blame actually lies with the average buyer.
PC makers have told us for years they only over-spec RAM because the public thinks more is better. Besides the amount of memory, a couple of other important, but not critical, questions to ask is what clock speed and what mode. With games that are graphically intensive, the GPU is the primary bottleneck on performance. The basic lesson is you should opt for dual-channel memory bandwidth configurations when possible.
There may be real competition between AMD and Intel when it comes to gaming CPUs in desktops now, but in gaming laptops, the world is still very much percent Intel. Still, there are a few things you need to consider about the CPU for your gaming laptop.
A typical Intel laptop CPU will pack from four to eight processor cores. We recommend that you not sweat the difference between 8th-gen and 9th-gen laptop CPUs.
Outside of security mitigations, the change is mostly a clock speed bump on Core i7 and Core i5 models. The key difference is at the high end, where the 9th-gen Core i9 gives you two more cores than the Core i7.
How many cores do you need in a gaming laptop? For most people on a budget, a 4-core CPU with Hyper-Threading will function just fine in most games, especially when combined with a lower-cost and lower performance GPU. Still, if you have the extra cash, a 6-core CPU with Hyper-Threading is likely the sweet spot for today and tomorrow.
If you plan to stream your gaming live or edit it, investing in a 6-core is recommended.
